WP 4.8 adds Significant Improvements to the Widget Area of the WordPress Backend Admin Console.
Prior to version 4.8 “Evans”, to display an image you will have to use a plugin or write HTML. This tends to be an area for “admin” or web developers because a lot of our clients are not comfortable coding in HTML. With WP 4.8’s new image widget, you can now directly add images to the side bar or select an image from the WordPress media library.
Video & Audio Widgets
Like the Image Widget feature, you can now upload video or any audio files to any sidebar without needing to install an external plugin. Display videos from YouTube, Vimeo or other third party providers. Just click “Select Video” in the widget area, then click “Insert from URL” link. Upload any audio files to the Media Library. Go to widget settings, select your file, and voila. It’s that easy to add personal welcome messages too!
Rich Text Widget (Visual Editor)
A WYSIWYG editor or Visual Editor has now been added to the Text Widgets unlocking rich-text editing capabilities. Add any widget easily by creating lists, adding emphasis, and quickly inserting links. It’s now that simple.
WordPress Dashboard: Events & News Widget
In addition to WordPress news updates in your dashboard, a new Events and News Widget has been added to version 4.8. This new widget will inform you about WordPress events in your area along with news updates. This way, you can network with other WordPress users, attend upcoming WordCamps and WordPress Meetups.
For WordPress Developers & Admins. Added customizations to make your life easier.
Added Accessibility to Admin Panel Headings
New CSS rules mean extraneous content (like “Add New” links) no longer need to be included in the admin-area headings. These panel headings improve the experience for people using assistive technologies.
Removal of Core Support for WMV and WMA Files
As fewer and fewer browsers support Silverlight, file formats which require the presence of the Silverlight plugin are now being removed from core support.
New capabilities have been introduced to 4.8 with an eye towards removing calls to
is_super_admin(). Additionally, new hooks and tweaks to more granularly control site and user counts per network have been added.
Media Widgets API
Introducing a new base media widget REST API schema opens up possibilities for even more media widgets (like galleries or playlists) for the future. The three new media widgets are powered by a shared base class that covers most of the interactions with the media modal. That class also makes it easier to create new media widgets and paves the way for more to come.
Customizer Width Variable for Sidebar
New responsive breakpoints have been added to the customizer sidebar to make it wider on high-resolution screens. Customizer controls can use percentage-based widths instead of pixels to set the sidebar display.
